Easter Special Offering Recipients
Please consider an Easter Special Offering gift to support Plymouth’s Just Peace covenant - working toward economic, social and/or climate justice for Des Moines Metro Area neighbors. Projects selected for this year’s gifts are:
Pastor’s Discretionary Fund (10%):
The Pastor’s discretionary fund provides for urgent, usually emergency funds for community members, covering costs such as rent assistance, utility bills, medical and medicine, and bus/travel expense.
The remainder of the Easter collection will be equally divided between the below initiatives.
Additionally, all of these gifts will be matched with Marlon Laverman Memorial Funds (serving at-risk children).
Des Moines Refugee Support:
The mission of the Des Moines Refugee Support group is to identify and bridge gaps for refugee families, in particular refugee children, as they establish their new lives in Iowa. For the Easter Special Offering, they are requesting funds to support Camp 2025 where 50 kids from the Des Moines metro area will attend a week at Camp Hantesa and 70 kids from the Des Moines metro area will attend a week of Y Camp..
Iowa Safe Schools:
The mission of Iowa Safe Schools is to provide safe, supportive, and nurturing learning environments and communities for LGBTQ and allied youth through education, outreach, advocacy, and direct services. For the Easter Special Offering, they are requesting funds to support scholarships for students in the greater Des Moines metro area to attend the annual Governor’s Conference on LGBTQ Youth, which will be it’s 20th year this year. The conference is the largest LGBTQ youth conference in the nation, creating a safe space for students to gather, show their pride, and learn about ways to advocate in their communities.
Love For Red:
Love For Red believes feeling clean and having dignity on your period should not be a privilege only some can enjoy. They seek to end period poverty through service, advocacy and awareness. For the Easter Special Offering, they are requesting funds to be used directly towards the menstrual product cost to expand their program in 10 schools (7 middle schools, 3 high schools) in Polk county for the fall of 2025.
Lutheran Services in Iowa:
In 2010, LSI established the Immigrant and Refugee Community Services (IRCS) program to address the shortage of long-term support and skill building for refugees in the Des Moines metro. The services include (but are not limited to) cultural support and interpretation for families, mental health services, citizenship education, community gardening, business development, etc. For the Easter Special Offering, they are requesting funds to help provide continued support for these programs as funding for these essential services has recently been cut at the federal level.
